Humans did not evolve from apes?

"Humans did not evolve from apes, humans and apes evolved from a common ancestor." is a quote that I see a lot in creationism vs evolution debates and it's one that confuses me. Surely Humans are apes and therefore any common ancestor between humans and another ape species must also have been an ape, unless someone is suggesting that Humans independently evolved 'apeness' which would seem ridiculous. Or are they arguing semantically against the use of the word 'from'? Would be grateful is someone could definitively clear this up for me.
