Question about Info on Checks?

My uncle works for the Check Fraud department at a local police department. He suggested we put the first letter of our name, and last name, followed by a P.O box not home address on a check. Is this correct, what are the advantages/disadvantages. We do have a P.O box and we are in the process of ordering new checks for an account we just opened. We keep tabs online in terms of what checks have gone through. We do however seldom check our P.O box.
